The Case In Four Facts

The world is paying attention. McKinsey and the World Economic Forum have identified closing the women's health gap as a $1 trillion annual GDP opportunity by 2040. Menopause is named as one of the key drivers. Addressing it at work is not a cost — it is a return.

Maritime is behind. Women represent just 1% of the world's seafarers (IMO-WISTA, 2024). The proportion of women across the sector has fallen, even as the industry commits publicly to inclusion. The skills shortage is real. The experienced women you already have are the most valuable resource you're at risk of losing.

This affects more people, and earlier, than most organisations realise. Perimenopause can begin a decade or more before menopause itself — many women in their late thirties and forties are already affected. 1 in 3 experience symptoms severe enough to impact their ability to work. The average age of menopause is 51 — the same window in which women should be reaching the peak of their careers. The Fast Exit is not about women stepping back. It is about workplaces that were never designed to keep them.

The law has changed. Employment tribunal cases relating to menopause rose 83% in a single year. The Employment Rights Act 2025 introduces mandatory Menopause Action Plans for UK employers with 250+ employees — voluntary from April 2026, mandatory from 2027. Manager awareness is one of the specific requirements. A written policy alone will not be sufficient.
